Gorillas are one of the most predominant primate species in the world. These are the largest living primate species, with a DNA 99% Close to humans. Gorillas are divided into the western gorilla specie and the eastern gorilla specie.

The eastern gorilla specie is located in the eastern central region of Africa, with the subspecies of the mountain gorillas and the eastern low land gorillas. The mountain gorilla known as (Gorilla beringei beringei) sub specie is located in Uganda and Rwanda

The eastern lowland gorilla (gorilla beringei graueri) sub specie is endemic, to the mountain forests of the eastern Democratic republic of Congo in central east Africa. These gorilla species are more than the mountain gorillas but fewer than the western gorillas, yet they are the largest in size among all the other subspecies.

The western specie of gorillas is found in the western region of Africa, subdivided into the western lowland gorillas and the cross river gorillas. These  western gorilla species are located in the  Democratic republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Angola.

The western lowland gorillas are mostly found in the montane secondary and primary forest; these are listed critically endangered despite the huge number of the species. The western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are the smallest among the four species of the gorillas and most of these species are kept in a Zoo.

The cross river gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehi) is sub specie of the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla).  It is one of the newly discovered gorilla specie by primatologists.

A combined gorilla safari can be enjoyed in Uganda, duded the pearl of Africa due to its richness in wildlife and landscape. The gorilla parks of Uganda are a home to the endangered mountain gorilla species. located in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga national park in western Uganda.

There are different gorilla families that are experienced on the Uganda gorilla safari in the primate parks. Witnessing their differences and way of life of the different gorilla families, how they interact with each other is truly a lifetime experience.

Currently the gorilla permits in Uganda are up for discounts, for those interested in gorilla trekking. For the non-foreign residents, the booking and purchase of a gorilla permit costs 400$, for the foreign residents it costs 300$ and for the East African citizens the permits cost 100,00UGX. This discounted offer was run from December 2020 and valid till March 31^st 2021.

Mgahinga national parks has only Nyakagezi family, as the only family available for trekking. Bwindi impenetrable national park has four sectors that include Ruhsaga sector in the south, Ruhija sector in the east, Nkuringo in the west and Buhoma sector in the region of the park. These are the only national parks in Uganda where gorilla trekking takes place

In Rwanda, the mountain gorillas are located in volcanoes national park. Located in the North West region of Rwanda, volcanoes national park is the only home of the mountain gorillas in Rwanda.  There are about 8 gorilla groups in volcanoes national park, which include Susa, Kwitonda, Agashya, Hirwa, Karisimbi, Bwenge, and Sabinyo among others.

Rwanda gorilla safaris are truly a lifetime experience,  accompanied  with other activities in the park. These include golden monkey trekking, cultural encounters, and mountaineering to mention but a few.  Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is rendered the most experience, as the gorilla permit are costed 1500$ for all the trekkers before the pandemic.  Currently the country has run discounts to attract tourists, with the gorilla permits for the locals costing $200 and $500for the foreign residents.

Gorilla safaris in Democratic republic of Congo are carried out in Virunga national park and Kahuzi Beiga national park. The eastern low land gorillas are the gorilla species that are trekked in the primate parks of Congo. Among the three gorilla countries of Uganda, D.R.C and Rwanda, the Democratic republic of Congo has the least expensive gorilla permits that costs $400 for the foreign nonresidents, $200 for the East African residents and $20 for the Congo residents.

A full gorilla safari is experienced when a tourists explorers the gorillas in a combined safari of the three countries. An encounter with the gorillas is made, as the trekkers witness, the gorillas playing, wrestling, mating, grooming and many more human like gestures.

Besides gorillas safaris in Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Other activities such as hiking, birding, wildlife viewing and cultural encounters can be experienced on an African safaris.

Gorilla trekking usually commences with a short briefing about ones’ conduct during the trek then followed by an 8 hour trek of the gorillas in the jungle depending on the location of the gorillas.
